Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of January 2-4, 2015:

1. BPA Gallery First Fridays Art Walk: “Whimsical Self Portraits”
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Avenue North
Why: This reception is for the Bainbridge Island Special Needs Foundation artists who worked with Mesolini Glass Studio on self portraits.

Nap Time by Rachel Fisher

2. A Better Life” with Rachel Fisher
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Islander Fisher’s got a thing for rodents. This series of works captures the experiences of a tribe? bevy? pack? of rats. For example, they race snails and hold a funeral for a slain comrade. You know, rat stuff.

3. First Fridays Art Walk
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: One of the last things to do with the out of towners over the holidays.

4. Karin Schminke: Shadows and Reflections Opening Reception
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E
Why: Take a gander at Schminke’s abstract works at her exhibit’s opening reception. Also enjoy Jason Russell’s ceramics and the works of Scott Allen, Erica Applewhite, Kathy Francis, and Elizabeth Reed Smith.

5. Memorial Service for Kathy Dunn
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Where: Bainbridge High School Commons
Why: Read more here.

6. Jewelry Making Demo with Peggy Hunt
When: Saturday, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E
Why: Because why wouldn’t you make jewelry from bicycle inner tubes?

No registration is necessary.

7. Opera Preview: Tosca
When: Saturday, 2-3:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: One of Puccini’s Big Three, featuring a heroine who throws herself from the ramparts, torture, and blasphemy. Norm Hollingshead walks you through it all.

8. Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) presents The EDGE Improv
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North
Why: Because it’s good to start off the new year laughing.

9. Mochi Tsuki
When: Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: IslandWood, 4450 Blakely Avenue NE
Why: Holy pounded sweet rice, Batman. It’s that time of year again. Seems like just yesterday we were gathered for this annual Bainbridge Island Japanese American community tradition.

10. First Sundays Jazz Concert
When: Sunday, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center, 402 Brien Drive
Why: Jazz pianist Tony Foster, drummer Joe Poole, and bassist Jon Hamar tackle film composers such as Henry Mancini and Ennio Morricone.
